FESTIVAL: July 2-4

BayFest 2004 prepares for another booming good time over the Fourth of July weekend with entertainment, military displays and fireworks shows. This year's entertainment includes singer/songwriter Liz Phair July 2, mellow rockers Train July 3 and country star Jo Dee Messina, left, July 4. There's also an Island Lifestyle Expo, fitness challenges, water sports, car shows, carnival rides and games. Admission depends on when you're going: 5 p.m.-closing July 2-4, it's $8 general, $5 kids 4-10; noon-5 p.m. July 3-4, it's $5 general, $3 kids 4-10. Free for keiki younger than 4. There are passes, too, available in advance at Papa John's Pizza locations and the the Marine base: $7 for a one-day pass and two Papa John's coupons; $16 for a three-day pass and two Papa John's coupons.

CONCERT: July 3

The fireworks start going off early with jazz pop band Spyro Gyra, left, in the house. The group appears at the third annual Guitars Under the Stars event, along with local jazz star Sonya Mendez performing with the Brian Kessler Band. Also on the menu: food and beverage stations, telescopes for star-gazing and a fireworks display at the end of the night. Tickets are $30 advance or $35 at the door.

The third annual Hawai'i Shakespeare Festival returns with three tales of love lost and won:

  • "Love's Labors Lost," a courtly battle of the sexes, is directed by Tony Pisculli. 8 p.m. July 9-10, 15, 17; 4 p.m. July 18.
  • "King Lear," right, a drama of deceit and grief, directed by Harry Wong III. 8 p.m. July 16, 22, 24; 4 p.m. July 17, 25.
  • "All's Well That Ends Well," a fairy-tale comedy, directed by R. Kevin Doyle. 8 p.m. July 23, 30-31; 4 p.m. July 24, Aug. 1.

Tickets are $16 general, $14 seniors/military, $8 students (under 18 or with college ID); $36 season ticket (all three plays); group discounts available, too.

FESTIVAL: July 10

Whee, it's time for ArtSpree! Presented by Friends of The Contemporary Museum, ArtSpree 2004 features a full day of art-related activities. Among the festivities: glass-blowing demonstrations, hands-on art activities and entertainment including Magic Mark, Essential Resophonics, Tangentz, Loose Screws, Capoeira and Jon Osorio. There'll be free parking, with shuttle service at Punahou School and King Kalakaua Plaza. Admission is free.

Manoa Valley Theatre prepares to wrap up a successful season with "The Underpants." Written by Carl Sternheim and adapted by Steve Martin, this laugh-out-loud comedy showcases the hilarious events that unfold after a bureaucrat's wife's underpants fall to the ground at a parade for the king. Tickets are $25, with $5 off for seniors and military. Those 25 and younger are $15.

FESTIVAL: July 16-17

Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Tahiti at the 4th annual Tahitian Cultural Festival, "Te Mahana Hiro'a O Tahiti." One of the highlights of the festival will be a Tahitian dance competition, with solo preliminaries July 16 and solo finals and group competitions wrapping up July 17. A separate competition will be held for drummers. Kama'aina admission is $8 general, $6 children 3-11 and free for children under 3. Kama'aina annual pass holders enter free. General admission starts at $30, with upgrades for evening shows and buffet dinner.

Diamond Head Theatre brings to a close its 2003-2004 season with the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar." Featuring the musical genius of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, this vibrant show tells the dramatic story of the last seven days of Jesus' life. Tickets are $12-$42.

FESTIVAL: July 17

July is American Beer Month. and what better way to celebrate than with a block party? The 2nd annual American Brews, Blues and BBQs kicks off with more than 25 local and national breweries showcasing more than 40 classic beer styles. The festivities also include a Home Brew contest, Home Brew master demonstration class, beer museum, retail booths, low-carb table, Beer and BBQ cook-off, blues bands and a children's water coloring activity, "Red, Write & Blue." Admission is free, although there is a $5 cost for the Home Brew contest. Scrip purchase for beer and beverages come in $5, $10 and $20 scrip bundles, and food is bought with cash only.

COMEDY: July 23-24

Hold on to your funnybones because comedian Gabriel Iglesias is coming to town. Hailing from California, this Latino comic is the next featured act in the On Stage Hawaii Comedy Invasion series. Iglesias' acting credits include "All That," "My Wife and Kids," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live." Tickets are $25 advance and $30 at the door; for 18 and older.

FESTIVAL: July 25

Come honor the original "leaping flea" at the 34th annual Ukulele Festival. Grammy award-winning vocalist James Ingram will be on hand for the celebrations, along with local artists Ohta-San (left), Keale 'Ohana, Uluwehi Guerrero, Daniel Ho, Troy Fernandez, Rocky Brown and Roy Sakuma's 800-piece 'ukulele band. Other guest artists include James Hill from Canada, Yuji Igarashi from Japan, Cerritos Senior Ukulele Group from California and Kaoru Kohonoike and KK Hawaiian Groove from Japan. Danny Kaleikini emcees. Free.

BUZZING ABOUT:

Flag waver

Sandi Patty, whose "Star-Spangled Banner" triggered hundreds of calls to ABC when she did the national anthem in 1986, will star in Schofield Barracks' annual Fourth of July spectacle at Sills Field. She'll sing twice, at 5:30 and 6:45 p.m., with local faves Tino & the Rhythm Klub opening the evening bill of fare at 4:30 p.m. Fireworks, with orchestral accompaniment from 8:30 p.m., will cap the evening

DVD is delayed

Jake Shimabukuro's first DVD, "Play Loud 'Ukulele," has been delayed; it was due Tuesday but now is gearing for a late summer release. Stay tuned.

Jack, Donavon and a film

Surfer/singer/filmmaker Jack Johnson and Donavon Frankenreiter will perform at screenings of a new surf documentary, "A Broke Down Melody," as a benefit for Johnson's Kokua Hawaii Foundation. The events take place at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Castle Theater of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and 8 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Hawai'i Theatre. Tickets — $26, $36, plus fees — go on sale July 10.
