Maui boy, 3, dies in auto accident

WAILUKU, Maui — A 3-year-old boy died after he was injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident in the back yard of his Kahakuloa home Tuesday, police said yesterday.

The child, Jrew Viela, was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center after the 5 p.m. accident.

The boy was riding with his father and 6-year-old cousin when the ATV overturned, police said. The 6-year-old boy was treated for minor injuries.

Ma'ili home, car damaged in fire

A father and his young son escaped uninjured early yesterday from their burning house at 87-237 Ho'okele Street in Ma'ili.

The 1:44 a.m. fire gutted the single-story home and destroyed the family car. Capt. Kenison Tejada, with the Honolulu Fire Dept., said the Red Cross is assisting the man and boy, as well as two others who lived in the house, in finding temporary shelter.

He said the fire caused an estimated $175,000 damage to the structure and another $40,000 in damage to the contents.



HONOLULU

H-1 off-ramp to close for 3 days

An off-ramp of the eastbound H-1 Freeway will be closed for three days starting this morning, state transportation officials said yesterday.

Exit 13-B, which connects the H-1 Freeway and Moanalua Freeway where the two roads intersect just past Aloha Stadium, will be closed from 9 a.m. today to 4:30 a.m. Monday for resurfacing work.

The Transportation Department advised drivers to use caution and allow for extra travel time.



Grandson, 20, charged in attack

Robert T. Street, 20, was arraigned yesterday in District Court on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

Street, who was charged Wednesday when he was discharged from Tripler Army Medical Center's psychiatric ward, is accused of choking and trying to smother his bedridden 87-year-old grandfather Saturday.

The victim was treated Saturday at St. Francis Medical Center-West and released. The suspect's grandmother witnessed the incident, police said.

Street is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.



Police probe 3 armed robberies

Police were investigating three armed robberies that occurred in a 19-hour period Wednesday involving several men carrying knives and guns.

A 47-year-old man told police three men, one of them with a gun, accosted and beat him at 12:25 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Waikiki Shell and took his wallet.

At 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, two 19-year-old men reported being robbed of cash at Makaloa and Ke'eaumoku streets by four men. One of the robbers had a gun and another a butterfly knife, police said.

The third incident involved two Kalihi boys, ages 16 and 17, who were robbed Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. at Bishop Street and Ala Moana by two men. The older victim was cut by a knife and the younger boy was punched, police said.

Police said they do not know if the robberies are connected.
