Scott captures national sailing title

Michael Scott of the Kane'ohe Yacht Club won the laser fleet competition yesterday at the four-day U.S. Youth Sailing Championships at Charleston, S.C.

The top 30 junior sailors competed in the laser (one-person racing sailboat) class.

Scott scored a meet-low 48 points in 11 races, including two firsts. Todd Hawkins of New Jersey was second with 56 points.

Scott, 18, is a recent graduate from Castle High School. He has been sailing lasers for four years.

Drew Robb, also of the Kane'ohe Yacht Club, finished 13th with 125 points.



GOLF

• Lynch tied for seventh at PGA event: Kane'ohe's John Lynch is tied for seventh after shooting 2-under-par 70 in yesterday's opening round of the 37th PGA Club Professional Championship, being played at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

Lynch, a pro at Ko'olau Golf Club, had five birdies — four coming between Nos. 8 and 12.

Mauna Kea's Kevin Hayashi, the Aloha Section PGA's other representative, is another shot back and tied for 19th. Hayashi also had five birdies, all but one coming between Nos. 6 and 11.

The tournament ends Sunday, with the Top 25 qualifying for the PGA Championship.



TRACK AND FIELD

• Youth athletes gear up for Hershey's: More than 400 boys and girls, ages 9 to 14, are expected to participate in the 21st annual Hershey Youth Track and Field state finals tomorrow at Kaiser High School, according to the Hawai'i Recreation and Park Association.

The meet, which starts at 7:45 a.m., includes the long jump, softball throw, short and long distance runs and relays.

Top state competitors are eligible for selection to the Pacific Southwest Regional team, which will participate in the national meet Aug. 7 at Hershey, Pa., according to Hershey Youth Program state chairman Dennis Arakaki.
