HPD chief candidates face exam

By Rod Ohira
Advertiser Staff Writer

The list of 13 local applicants who have qualified to take today's written essay exam for the position of Honolulu police chief includes two deputy chiefs, two assistant chiefs, eight majors and a captain.

All are uniformed Honolulu Police Department officers.

Ron Taketa, chairman of the Honolulu Police Commission, confirmed that 13 local applicants and two from the Mainland qualified to take today's test but declined to identify them. The Advertiser identified the 13 by asking them if they were taking today's test.

The 13 officers are deputy chiefs Glen Kajiyama and Paul Putzulu; assistant chiefs Boisse Correa and Robert Prasser; Majs. Daniel Hanagami, Donna Anderson, Michael Tucker; Susan Ballard, Thomas Nitta, Brad Huber, Delbert Tatsuyama and Timothy Slovak; and Capt. Deborah Tandal.

The written essay exam is the first of four screening tests in the selection process set up by consultant Terry Eisenberg of Los Gatos, Calif.-based Personal Performance Inc. The essay exam will be followed by testing at an assessment center, a psychological test and, lastly, an oral exam. The commission plans to name a chief by the end of August.
