Berg helps U.S. qualify for World Grand Prix

Team USA, with Punahou graduate Lindsey Berg on the roster, swept Puerto Rico, 30-28, 25-15, 25-17, Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Pan American Cup at Mexicali, Mexico.

With the win, the United States (4-1) qualified for the 2005 World Grand Prix. It plays the Dominican Republic in the semifinals.

Four American players had at least 10 kills. The U.S. offense was led by Nancy Metcalf's 24 points (23 kills, 1 block).

In the other quarterfinal, Brazil beat Canada, 3-1, and will play Cuba in the semifinals.

'Champions' clinic signup begins today

Registration for a volleyball camp taught by former University of Hawai'i players including Olympian and All-American Deitre Collins will be held today fronting Star Markets in Kahala Mall and 'Ewa Beach.

Signup for the "Volleyball Camp with Champions" will be at Kahala (10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) and 'Ewa Beach (1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.).

The camp to be held July 29 to Aug. 1 at Waipahu High and the Waipahu Rec Center will feature former Long Beach State setter Joy McKienzie, former USC outside hitter Kashi Cormier and former UH players Eyal Zimet, Arri Jeschke, Dejan Miladinovic and Sivan Leoni. The camps are open to boys and girls in grades 7 to 12. Cost is $185 per individual or $990 for a six-player team. For more information, call 223-3584 or email volleyballcamps@hawaii.com.

Hayashi tied for fifth following 4-under 68

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi shot a 4-under-par 68 to pull into a tie for fifth halfway through the 37th PGA Club Professional Championship. The tournament is being played at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

Jeff Coston shot a course-record 64 yesterday and leads the tournament at 134. Hayashi, an Aloha Section pro at Mauna Kea, is five back. Ko'olau Golf Club's John Lynch (75-145) dropped to 41st.

Hayashi birdied Nos. 6, 8 and 9 for the second time in as many days. He also birdied four of the last six holes, but bogeyed 16 and double-bogeyed 15.

The Top 25 finishers in this $450,000 tournament qualify for the 86th PGA Championship in August.

Youth football camp this weekend at 'Aiea

The Hawai'i Youth Football Camp, featuring NFL players as camp conductors, will be held today and tomorrow at 'Aiea High.

Not to be confused with the NFL Junior Development camp, this one features players such as former University of Hawai'i athletes Pisa Tinoisamoa (Rams), Wayne Hunter (Seahawks) and Ma'a Tanuvasa (formerly of the Broncos).

Camps run from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. Check-in is one hour prior to each camp.
