FITNESS PROFILE
Sports steers daughter through lifetime of exercise

By Paula Rath

The premiere issue of Her Sport magazine, out on the stands this month, features a story on mothers and daughters whose lives and relationships have been shaped by the sharing of sports. Among them are paddlers Patty Eames of Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island, and Jessie Eames of Honolulu.

Here's more on Jessie's fitness regimen.

Name: Jessica "Jessie" Eames.

Age: 23.

Profession: Nursing student at Kapi'olani Community College.

Height: 5-feet-11.

Weight: 158 pounds.

Workout habits: Paddling three times a week, running three to four miles three times a week, lifting weights at 24Hour Fitness whenever I can find the extra time and energy.

When and why I started working out: I have been playing sports my entire life, so working out has been my lifestyle for as far back as I can remember. I began to get a little more serious in my training after high school, when I realized that I could make great achievements if I set my mind on it.

My good foods/bad foods: I love to make big fresh garden salads, tofu stir-fry, my secret banana/peanut butter smoothies, chocolate-chip cookies and banana bread. I also have a weakness for my grandma's home-made chocolate fudge.

My biggest motivator: Winning. Knowing that there are people out there who want to be better just pushes me to want to train harder. I am also addicted to the natural high I get after a good workout.

My biggest roadblock to fitness: School. Because I am taking classes, I have to set my training schedule around school. Sometimes, by the time I actually do get time to work out, I am exhausted from a long day of studying or a late night of typing up my homework.

What saves my sanity: Taking a short visit back to my hometown in the country to take a break from the craziness of O'ahu's city life. I also talk on the phone with my best friend who lives on Kaua'i.

My next challenge: My next big challenge is stealing gold medals in the upcoming World Sprints canoe races this August in Hilo.

Advice for those in the same boat: Do what you enjoy, and enjoy what you do.

Correction: The photo shows Gail Grabowsky training with Jessie Eames. Grabowsky was misidentified in the caption in a previous version of this story.
