Kane'ohe rolls to fifth consecutive victory

Koa Kai won the men's freshmen 1-mile race during the Windward Kai Canoe Club Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. Koa Kai finished in 7 minutes, 30.35 seconds.

Randy Sanborn knows the secret to beating Kane'ohe Canoe Club.

"They don't show up for the race," said Sanborn, coach of Manu O Ke Kai Canoe Club. "If they don't show up, then everybody can beat them."

The Waikiki Beach Boys senior women rebounded from a disqualification last week to win yesterday's 1 1/2-mile race at the Windward Kai Canoe Club Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

But Kane'ohe did show up and dominated again yesterday, amassing 83 points to win the AAA division for larger canoe clubs at the Windward Kai Canoe Club Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. Kane'ohe received another strong performance from its youth teams and has won all five Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a regattas this season.

"They got the numbers," Sanborn said of Kane'ohe's club size. "Today was a bad day. A lot of people (from other clubs) didn't show up. They (Kane'ohe) got the experienced paddlers. Good club, good coaches."

Kane'ohe won 10 of the 21 youth races to start the day, contributing 50 points to the team. Manu O Ke Kai and Lokahi, which tied for second behind Kane'ohe, finished with 50.

"Monday through Friday, (the coaches) are working hard with the kids," said David Aquino, one of Kane'ohe's coaches. "Running, conditioning, technique."

Aquino added that his club's success has come from the participation of coaches, staff and paddlers and that "everybody comes out and practices hard."

While most of Kane'ohe's youth teams have been coming out on top this season, Seth Ramolete said there is still more work ahead, especially for his boys 18-and-under team.

"We're still not at the level of other teams," said Ramolete, whose crew won the 1-mile race in 7 minutes, 46.83 seconds. "The guys from OHCRA (O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association), they are getting like 7:30s. That's all we're trying to shoot for, to get on their level.

"We're getting there. There's still a lot of hardwork ahead."

On the boys 18 crew were Ramolete, Kawika Kahiapo, Chase Silva, Gabe Tabadero, Dominic Cullen and Keoni Anderson.

The Waikiki Beach Boys senior women's team had the largest margin of victory yesterday, winning the 1ð-mile race in 13:22.26, nearly 36 seconds ahead of Lokahi.

The Waikiki Beach Boys senior women — Sue Brown, Dana Gorecki, Kathleen Grubbs, Valerie Hershey, Erin Offenhauser and Kelsa Teeters — were more cautious yesterday after a disqualification at last Sunday's regatta when their canoe hit a flag at the 1-mile turn.

"I definitely took the turns really conservative," Brown said. "They weren't fast but safe. I took everything very wide."

Aside from last week's disqualification, the Waikiki Beach Boys have won every senior women's race this season.

"We have a small group of girls that get a lot more individual attention," Brown said. "If anything, we really did our homework during the offseason, got inshape and we're doing our homework now outside the canoe."

Brown was also on the club's winning women's open 4 team as the Waikiki Beach Boys won a five races yesterday to win the A division for the fifth straight week with 31 points.

Koa Kai also won the AA division title for the fifth straight week with 56 points behind seven first-place finishes.

Manu O Ke Kai's senior men's team of Bobo Tantog, Charlie Tantog, Bonga Perkins, Greg Wright, John Hoogsteden and Moku Sanborn won the 1ð-mile race in 11:40.13, 10 seconds ahead of Koa Kai. Manu O Ke Kai has yet to lose in that race this season, adding to the pressure of coming out on top each week.

"There is pressure," Wright said. "We have the first-place spot and you want to hold it."

Lanikai ends Kailua streak

Lanikai Canoe Club won the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association's Waimanalo Regatta yesterday at Waimanalo Beach Park to end Kailua Canoe's Club winning streak.

Lanikai scored 101 points, followed by Kailua with 73 and Hui Lanikila with 68 in the AA Division for larger canoe clubs. Kailua had won the first three meets of the OHCRA season.

Keahiakahoe scored 12 points to win A Division, followed by Waimanalo with 11 and Anuenue with 8.
