Hayashi misses cut for PGA tourney

Advertiser Staff

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi shot a 5-over 77 yesterday and finished tied for 27th at the 37th PGA Club Professional Championship at Nashport, Ohio, failing to qualify for the PGA Championship.

The top 25 finishers earned spots in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits at Kohler, Wis., in August. Hayashi was a stroke short of a playoff for the final spot.

Bob Sowards, a 36-year-old assistant pro at Wedgwood Golf and Country Club in suburban Columbus, shot a 70 yesterday and finished at 276 to win, a stroke ahead of Mike Small, the golf coach at the University of Illinois.

Hayashi, a teaching pro at the Mauna Kea Resort on the Big Island, started the final round tied for 10th. But he finished with seven bogeys, including five on the front nine. He finished at 290 and won $3,161.53.

Ko'olau Golf Club's John Lynch closed with a 79—301 (tied for 76th) and earned $1,290.

AIR RIFLERY

Tanoue wins shooting national rifle title

Honolulu's Ryan Tanoue, a senior-to-be at University of Nevada, captured the USA Shooting 10-meter air rifle title Thursday at the national rifle and pistol championships at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Tanoue, a 2001 graduate of Saint Louis School, captured the 10-meter event with a 1286.1 score, edging Matt Rawlings, who had a 1284.5. Tanoue and Rawlings will be joined by third-place finisher Jonathan Hall to form the three-man, 10-meter air rifle squad for USA Shooting.

USA Shooting is the governing body for the shooting sports for the U.S. Olympic Committee. Tanoue, a former NCAA air rifle champion, earlier this summer just missed qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team in air rifle.

Tanoue has won five NCAA All-America awards, three in air rifle (2002, 2003, 2004) and two in small bore (2003, 2004). He helped Nevada to its best NCAA finish with a runner-up spot at this year's NCAA Championships.
