UH-Manoa drops in best-value rankings

Advertiser Staff

Consumers Digest magazine has corrected its list of the "Top 50 Best Values for Public Colleges and Universities" from the May/June 2004 issue and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa was sent down from No. 5 to No. 22 out of 50 public colleges and universities. Brigham Young University-Hawai'i remained at No. 1 in the Top 25 list of best-value private colleges and universities in the nation. UH-Manoa's nonresident tuition is $10,060 annually, with room and board costing about $7,000. BYUH's non-church member tuition is $3,860 a year, with room and board costing $4,660.

The rankings were based on a "value index" that compared the academic standing of first-time freshmen, graduation rates, student-to-faculty ratio and percentage of faculty with doctorate's to nonresident tuition levels and housing costs. Consumers Digest said it regretted the error, which resulted from a faulty sorting process.
