Lions' benches a boon for seniors
The Hawai'i Kai Lions have installed concrete benches in front of the Hawai'i Kai post office and Koko Head Elementary School as part of the group's community service.
The benches were made by Andy Uramoto, Mino Takaesu, Walter Kuroiwa, Sindy Sindiong, Keith Katsuda, Stan Ito, Bunny Lee, Richard Ohta, Roy Aoki, and Toshi Nishioka at the request of members of the Hawai'i Kai Retirement Community.
Residents at the senior housing group had asked the post office to install benches outside so seniors could sit while waiting for the shuttle van to pick them up. But the post office didn't have the resources, so the Lions began making the benches in April and installed them this month. Board to meet next in August
The Kuli'ou'ou/Kalani Iki Neighborhood Board will not meet in July. The elected group will next meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at the 'Aina Haina Public Library, 5246 Kalaniana'ole Highway.
For more information contact the city at 527-5578.

Seniors to meet Abercrombie
Senior citizens will meet with U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie at 9:15 a.m. today at the Kilauea Community Center to talk about recent changes to the Medicare law dealing with prescription drugs.
Abercrombie will be joined by Pamela Cunningham of SagePlus to help explain the prescription drug discount card that is now available and the changes to Medicare's drug coverage to begin next year.
The Hawai'i congressman voted against the bill when it passed last year because of what he sees as serious defects in the law.
The center is at 4109 Kilauea Ave.
