Willoughby receives WAC Kearney Award

Former University of Hawai'i volleyball standout Kim Willoughby was honored by the Western Athletic Conference as the female recipient of the Joe Kearney Award for the second consecutive year, the league announced yesterday.

Willoughby completed her volleyball eligibility this past season. She finished as UH's career leader in kills (2,598), kill attempts (5,327), kills per game (5.92), service aces (194), digs (1,440) and digs per game (3.28). She led the Rainbow Wahine to the national semifinals of the 2003 NCAA Tournament and was named National Player of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association and Volleyball Magazine.

Basketball player Kirk Snyder of Nevada won the men's award. He was drafted in the first round of last week's NBA Draft.

Cross country

BYU-Hawai'i's Smith makes the grade

Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's cross country runner Chelsea Smith has been named to the 2004 Academic All-America College Division Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors Association.

The team comprises athletes from both sports in NCAA II, NCAA III, and the NAIA. She is the only underclassman on the team.

Smith, a sophomore from Mead, Wash., carries a 3.86 grade point average as an exercise and sport science major at BYUH.

Last fall she won the NCAA II Cross Country National Championship by 25 seconds and was named West Region Runner of the Year. She was also a finalist for the Honda Award as the top female athlete in Division II.

Golf

Carll is top seed at Turtle Bay Match Play

Kevin Carll, a professional from Ko Olina Golf Course, shot a 74 in yesterday's qualifying round and will enter today's first round of the 2004 Turtle Bay Resort Match Play Championships as the No. 1 seed.

Defending champion Kevin Hayashi participated in the recently completed National Club Professional Championship in Ohio, and will not compete at Turtle Bay.

Carll and second-seeded Matthew Pakkala (75) received first-round byes. In the senior division, Mike Iyoki (80) is automatically the top seed as the defending champion.

Championship matches begin at 7:30 a.m. today at the Arnold Palmer Course. Senior matches begin at 7 a.m.
