Police arrest suspect in series of bank heists

By Rod Ohira
Advertiser Staff Writer

A man who Honolulu police suspect is the serial bank robber they have nicknamed the "uncle bandit" was arrested yesterday at Salt Lake Shopping Center after being identified by a robbery detective.

HPD Detective Brian Johnson was waiting for the bank to open at the shopping center to conduct an interview when he spotted the man driving in the parking lot, possibly "casing" the bank, said Lt. Ray Quon of the HPD robbery detail.

Based on information received Monday, police had identified a possible suspect through information about his sports utility vehicle and Johnson made the connection, Quon said.

The man had been "casing" another bank Monday and had been recognized by an employee from a previous robbery, said Quon.

The suspected robber was arrested by Johnson at the shopping center at 848 Ala Liliko'i at 9 a.m. yesterday. Robbery detectives cross-deputized as federal agents were preparing a federal complaint today charging the man with the May 7 robbery of First Hawaiian Bank's branch at 433 Kapahulu Ave.

The "uncle bandit" is also suspected of robbing American Savings Bank at Kam Shopping Center on May 5, First Hawaiian's Liliha branch on April 30, ASB McCully on April 22, Central Pacific Bank's Kalihi branch on April 17, ASB Liliha on April 5 and last year's Hawaii National Bank Airport branch robbery on Aug. 1.

With yesterday's arrest and last week's arrest of Ryan Gary Piiohia, who was charged with the June 21 robbery of Central Pacific Bank's Mo'ili'ili branch, police consider 10 bank robbery cases solved.
