QUICK BITES
Here's to Vino's 'little brother'

By Wanda A. Adams
Advertiser Food Editor

FURUYA
In keeping with a trend that's long been everywhere on the Mainland, Little Vino, a cozy 60-seat spot specializing in small plates matched with interesting wines, opens July 14 at Restaurant Row, adjacent to Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar.

The restaurant is the "little brother" of Sansei owner D.K. Kodama's Vino in Kapalua, Maui, in partnership with master sommelier Chuck Furuya. They're installing a 20-spigot Cruvinet wine dispensing system. Sansei corporate chef Tom Selman is designing a menu similar to Vino's (butternut squash and goat cheese-mushroom raviolis, Caprese salad, grilled shrimp, Tuscan skirt steak, petite osso buco).

Chef showcases Grandma's recipes

The flavors of Portugal will be featured in the Plantation Cafe at the Ala Moana Hotel when sous chef Mark Braz opens his vovó's (grandma's) recipe file to share dishes of Portugal, as well as the Azores and Madeira (where most Hawai'i Portuguese have roots).

Portuguese menu items are available as lunch and dinner specials Tuesday through Thursday and Friday lunchtime through July 25, as well as being part of Friday and Saturday night buffets and Sunday brunch.

The recipes were taste-tested by members of the Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage, so you know they're autentico. Prices for the buffet range from $13.50 on weekdays to $25.50 for weekend dinner and brunch. 955-4811.

Correction: An item in a previous version of these Quick Bites was unclear about when the Portuguese menu items will be available as at the Ala Moana Hotel's Plantation Cafe.
