Washington junior inside linebacker Joe Lobendahn was selected by his teammates as a team captain, despite not playing most of last season because of an injury.
"The start of this year, it was one of my goals, and I felt pretty honored," Lobendahn said of his selection as a captain, a rare achievement for a junior.
Lobendahn
The 2001 graduate of Saint Louis from Honolulu injured his right knee in the second game of the season and had surgery in September.
This past spring training, Lobendahn said he performed noncontact drills. He said he's on pace to be ready for the start of the Huskies' fall camp in mid-August.
"I'm excited, I took a year off and I just can't wait to hit somebody again," he said. "Just having that feeling back and running around with the guys. It's not much fun standing on the sidelines and watching your friends."
He will spend the rest of the summer taking classes, working out, and working as a nanny for two boys, ages 7 and 9.
"It's fun; they call me their coach, instead of a nanny," he said. "I just took them to the stadium (yesterday) and we ran around and played some drills."
Men's Volleyball
The La Verne (Calif.) men's volleyball program, which features three players from Hawai'i, has been discontinued, according to the school's Web site.
"This was an extremely difficult decision and one that came only after a careful and thorough investigation," La Verne President Steve Morgan said on the Web site.
Outside hitters Elliot Naito (Kohala), Jarrett Day (Kamehameha '03 of Hilo) and Ricky Estrada (Kamehameha of Kailua) are listed on the team's roster.
