UH places 95th in NCAA athletics competition

The University of Hawai'i finished 95th in the 2003-04 Directors' Cup all-sports standings for NCAA Division I schools, its lowest finish in three years.

Stanford won the honors as having the best overall athletics program for the 10th consecutive year. The Cardinal amassed 1,337.25 points to beat runner-up Michigan by 111 points.

Points were awarded based upon finishes in more than 20 NCAA championships and sports. Of the 327 eligible colleges and universities in the Division I, a total of 278 (85 percent) scored points in the competition.

Boise State, which placed 66th, was the top finisher among Western Athletic Conference members with 256.25 points. UH scored 179.5 points. Its best finish was 68th in 1995-96.

In Division II, Brigham Young University-Hawai'i was 66th with 214 points, UH-Hilo 112nd with 131 and Hawai'i Pacific University 123rd with 114. Grand Valley State (Mich.) led the 224-school field with 810 points.

Top seeds advance in Turtle Bay match play

Top seed Kevin Carll of Ko Olina Golf Club and second seed Matthew Pakkala of Kuki'o Club advanced yesterday to the semifinals of the Turtle Bay Resort Match Play Championship at Turtle Bay's Arnold Palmer Course.

Carll defeated Brad Bowen of Maui Country Club, 2 and 1, and Pakkala stopped Beau Yokomoto of Pearl Country Club, 2-up.

In other quarterfinals, Lance Taketa of Hilo Municipal defeated Kirk Nelson of Makena, 1-up, and Brian Sasada of Makena ousted Andrew Feldmann of Oahu Country Club, 3 and 1.

Carll plays Sasada and Pakkala meets Taketa in the semifinals today. The final follows in the afternoon.

In the senior division, Larry Stubblefield eliminated defending champion Mike Iyoki, 1-up on the 19th hole, in the semifinals. Stubblefield will face Steven Hookano, who ousted Rich Fite, 2 and 1. The 18-hole final is today.




SAILING

Pacific Cup race to Kane'ohe under way

Some of the more than 50 yachts entered in the biennial West Marine Pacific Cup set sail yesterday on the first day of the 2,070-mile biennial race from San Francisco Bay to Kane'ohe Bay.

Tutto Bene, a Beneteau 38s5 from Vallejo, Calif., was the overall and Division B (smaller yachts) leader.

Bravo, a Pretorian 35 from San Francisco, is the leader in Division A (larger yachts).

Hawai'i entries include Lou and Kim Ickler's 38-foot Ghost, which was reported in fourth place in Division A. Bill Myers' Kane'ohe Yacht Club entrant, Cirrus, was second in Division B. Ikaika, skippered by Tony Miller, was fourth in the same division, representing Hawai'i Yacht Club.



VOLLEYBALL

Stanley sparks USA victory over Russia

Honolulu's Clay Stanley scored a match-high 22 points as the USA men's national volleyball team beat Russia, 3-1, Monday night in the finale of a three-match series at Reliant Arena in Houston.

Stanley had 15 kills, five aces and two blocks as the U.S. won, 20-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-19, after losing the previous two matches.
