Maui police investigating fatal shooting by officer

By Rod Ohira

A man was shot and killed yesterday by a Maui police officer in Kihei in what was the second fatal shooting involving Maui police this year.

Last night’s shooting occurred about 6:30 p.m. between Waiohuli Beach and Lipoa Street, police said.

Maui police would say little about the case, but did say that it is classified as an assault against a police officer.

Police said the shooting victim sprayed the officer in the face with a chemical agent.

Acting Lt. Jamie Becraft, Maui police spokesman, declined comment.

Police said the shooting victim was 48 and formerly of Oklahoma.

The police officer who shot the man is a Kihei patrol officer who was treated at Maui Memorial Hospital for exposure to a chemical agent and released.

Becraft refused to say what led to the confrontation.

On Jan. 23, two officers fired at a 27-year-old Maui woman who was driving a stolen car in Pa'ia.

Lisa K. Tomita Kaina died in that shooting.

Maui police have said that although an investigation into that shooting was continuing, no criminal charges were expected against the officers.

Becraft said the two officers involved in the Kaina shooting have been cleared to return to work.
