• Historic Big Island Kahua Ranch, the 8,500-acre working livestock ranch and tourist attraction in North Kohala, quietly passed to the next generation this month. Veterinarian HERBERT M. (TIM) RICHARDS III took over the titles of president and general manager, replacing his father, HERBERT M. (MONTY) RICHARDS. Monty Richards, who marked the half-century mark with the family-owned ranch in December, will continue to serve as chairman and trustee.

The elder Richards began work on the ranch in 1953, assuming management from his uncle, Atherton Richards, in 1958. The ranch had been in the family since its 1928 purchase.

Monty Richards, who also served as a member of the University of Hawai'i Board of Regents for 16 years, is known for his innovations at Kahua Ranch, including introducing alternative energy power and artificial insemination to enhance cattle genetics.

Today, the ranch attracts more than 5,500 visitors, offering tourist activities, ranch cottage rentals, conference facilities, tours, weddings, retail stores and sales of Kahua beef and lamb.

GREGG OISHI, for three years Kuakini Health System vice president and chief financial officer, will see the addition of the title — and responsibilities — of chief operating officer with his recent promotion to senior vice president. In addition to administratively overseeing day-to-day operations of Kuakini Medical Center, he will oversee a number of departments, including accounting, purchasing, clinical support services, surgical nursing services and emergency services. He is a veteran of management and senior positions at Kapi'olani Health, Kapi'olani HealthHawaii and the accounting firm of Ernst and Young.

DOUGLAS ROTHENBURGER, who has worked for the Las Vegas Convention Center and on such events as the opening of the Seattle Seahawks Stadium in 2002 and the Olympic Stadium in 1996, has been hired as executive chef of the Hawai'i Convention Center. Previously, he was executive sous chef for American food service provider, ARAMARK Corp., Sports and Entertainment, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

JANE B. SMOOT, an Edward Jones financial firm investment representative in Honolulu for four years, is one of 50 others — chosen from among 29,000 associates worldwide — to be added as a principal in the firm's holding company, the Jones Financial Companies. Smoot, who continues to serve as an investment representative in the firm's 'Aina Haina office, currently is Hawai'i regional leader overseeing 32 other investment representatives.

MARK HIGA, who joined Architects Hawai'i as a designer in 2000, has been promoted to an associate. His current projects include the 750-unit luxury master-planned Marriott Vacation Club International Ko Olina Timeshare and The Shops at Mauna Lani, a resort retail shopping center.
