Third Kalihi shooting suspect arrested

Jonathan Rivera Soriano has been in jail since last Halloween eve, accused of attempted murder in connection with an Oct. 18 shooting in Kalihi and unable to post $275,000 bail. Since his arrest, Soriano has maintained his innocence.

Yesterday, Honolulu police arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion that he is involved in the Kalihi case. Police now say they do not believe Soriano was involved in the shooting.

HPD Criminal Investigation Division Capt. Alan Arita acknowledged today that "through further investigation, a new suspect has been identified and the previous suspect does not appear to be responsible for the shooting in the case."

Myles Breiner, Soriano’s attorney, filed an oral motion today in Circuit Court seeking surpervised release for his client. The motion was denied by Judge Michael Town but a bail-reduction hearing has been set for March 11. Town denied supervised release noting that it was premature to release Soriano without allowing police to do their proper due diligence, said Jim Fulton of the Honolulu prosecuting attorney’s office.

Soriano and John Paul "JP" Madrid are accused of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder in an attack on two men on Oct. 18 at the intersection of Kaiwi'ula and Alokele streets in Kalihi. Madrid was arrested and charged on Oct. 21.

Police reports filed at court identified Madrid and Soriano as the two suspects involved. Soriano was arrested on a CrimeStoppers tip. He was charged after being identified in a photo lineup.

Soriano passed a polygraph test Feb. 5. "No one has ever identified him and Madrid said the first time he met my guy was when they were in jail," Breiner said.
