Two more arrested in jewelry heist

Police yesterday arrested an 18-year-old man and 16-year-old boy on suspicion of armed robbery in connection with the Feb. 11 holdup of a Salt Lake jewelry store.

The man was arrested at 91-980 North Road at 10:20 a.m. It was not reported where or when the boy, who was booked as a juvenile for first-degree robbery, was arrested.

Police previously arrested two other 16-year-old boys as suspects in the robbery of LG Creations. One was arrested on the day of the robbery in 'Ewa in a green Honda described by witnesses as the getaway car; the other surrendered to police on Feb. 13.

Search called off for wave victim

The Honolulu Fire Department yesterday suspended its search for a 20-year-old Schofield woman soldier who was swept out to sea by a large wave at Waimea Bay at around midnight Friday.

Firefighters conducted an air search Saturday, Sunday and yesterday and also searched the shoreline around Waimea Bay.

Man shot by police identified

KIHEI, Maui — The man shot and killed by a Maui police officer Sunday night was identified yesterday as Charles Benson Ogden, 48, formerly of Oklahoma. Police said they have been unable to find a local address for him.

The shooting happened at 6:15 p.m. Sunday on a stretch of beach about 150 yards south of Lipoa Street. Police said the 32-year-old uniformed patrol officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a report of a man sitting close to the beach access with his shorts pulled down around his knees.

Ogden reportedly began running or walking away and, when confronted by the officer, sprayed the officer with a chemical agent, such as pepper spray or Mace. Then the officer shot him, police said.

The officer, a 9 1/2-year veteran of the Maui Police Department, was treated at Maui Memorial and released. The officer is on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, the usual action in such cases.
