HONOLULU

Man hit by bus on Kalaniana'ole

A man was struck and killed by a bus on Kalaniana'ole Highway in front of Kalani High School yesterday afternoon, and police are investigating the death as a possible suicide.

Honolulu Police Department Lt. Alan Anami said statements from witnesses indicate that the man, who was in his 40s, made a voluntary move toward the bus at about 3:45 p.m. The incident snarled traffic for hours.


Kalihi Stream contaminated

A sewer that was clogged by roots overflowed yesterday, spilling about 1,500 gallons of raw sewage into Kalihi Stream.

The spill began at 7:55 a.m. near 1809 Alu Place and was stopped at 3 p.m., city officials said. Warning signs were posted along the stream and Ke'ehi Lagoon and the water will be tested for contamination.


Man found off Waikiki dies

A 74-year-old man has died after being found unconscious in waters off Waikiki. Geza Szullo of British Columbia was found at about 4:35 a.m. Sunday, about 150 feet offshore, police said.

He died at Straub Clinic and Hospital.


Suspect arrested in fatal stabbing

A 22-year-old McCully man was arrested Sunday in connection with the stabbing of a man Feb. 22 at Kalakaua Recreation Center. The victim, also 22, died Thursday at The Queen's Medical Center.

The arrested man surrendered to police yesterday at 4:20 p.m. and was booked on suspicion of second-degree murder. He was released pending investigation.


Mauna Kea briefing today

Lawmakers today will hear representatives of the University of Hawai'i, environmentalists and the Hawaiian community discuss developments in the six years since state auditor Marion Higa issued her report criticizing the management of the Mauna Kea summit, site of 13 separate telescope installations.

The informational briefing begins at 2 p.m. in conference room 329 at the State Capitol.

In her report, issued in February 1998, Higa concluded that the UH Institute for Astronomy and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources have been sloppy in their management of the summit, neglecting archaeological sites and threatening natural resources.

Hit-run suspect turns himself in

KAHULUI, Maui — A 39-year-old Kahului man surrendered to police Friday after investigators said his Mazda minivan may have been involved in a hit-and-run collision Feb. 24 involving a pedestrian. The man was booked on suspicion of failure to render aid and later released pending investigation.

The injured pedestrian, 20-year-old Michelle L. Rosa, is in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center.


58,000 gallons of sewage spilled

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui County yesterday reported that a sewage spill of approximately 58,000 gallons occurred in Lahaina during heavy rains Friday night.

The overflow, from 11:23 to 11:45 p.m., occurred when a pump motor failed at Lahaina Pump Station No. 1 on Halawai Drive. The overflow spilled into a ditch and through a culvert under the Honoapi'ilani Highway before stopping at a North Beach parking area.
