BIG ISLAND

Construction worker killed

HILO, Hawai'i — A 48-year-old construction worker was killed yesterday morning when he was run over by a grader on a South Kohala construction site.

Fire officials were called to the Kolea condominium construction site on Waikoloa Beach Road at 8:20 a.m. and found that Gordon Cagampang of Kailua, Kona, had died at the scene. Cagampang apparently was lying on the ground and reaching into a manhole to work when he was run over by the grader and suffered head injuries, police said.


CENTRAL O'AHU

City to extend Mililani recycling

An experimental curbside recycling program in Mililani will continue beyond its four-month pilot phase while the city works on plans to expand it islandwide, Mayor Jeremy Harris said.

About 68 percent of Mililani households participated in the project, according to city-commissioned telephone surveys.

Regular rubbish pickup will continue twice a week. Crews will pick up mixed recyclables every other week. Green waste will be collected on the alternating week.


WINDWARD O'AHU

Youth group to train mentors

A Windward youth group will train volunteers to mentor youths at risk in return for a 10-month commitment to help a teenager. The training by Breakthroughs for Youth at Risk will be March 12-14. Orientation meetings will be held to learn more about the program. The meetings are at 7 p.m. today, March 8 and 12 at Castle High School, Room 37. For more information, call 235-2547 or 779-7294.


HONOLULU

Ward work will shut H-1 lanes

The two right lanes of H-1 in the vicinity of Ward Avenue will be closed from 10 tonight until 4 a.m. tomorrow while a variable message sign at the Ward Street overpass is repaired.

The left lane of the road, also known as the Lunalilo Freeway, will remain open, according to the state Department of Transportation. The Vineyard Street exit will be closed and the Pi'ikoi on-ramp will remain open to Vineyard Boulevard only.
