Iolani AD Hiramoto to retire at end of June

Iolani School co-athletic director Judy Hiramoto has announced she will retire at the end of June.

Hiramoto, Iolani's first female athletic director, held the position for five years — serving alongside Carl Schroers, the school's other athletic director.

Hiramoto oversaw Iolani's bowling, soccer, tennis, paddling, basketball, golf and judo programs.

She previously served as an Iolani counselor for five years and spent 28 years in the Department of Education as a counselor at Moanalua High School and resource teacher with the Central District Office.

PREP BASKETBALL

• Punahou tournament tips off: The Fourth Annual Punahou Wahine Spring Basketball Classic starts today with action on two courts at Hemmeter Field House.

Three of last year's state semifinalists — champion Punahou, runner-up Kahuku and Moanalua — highlight the 10-team field that will play against scheduled opponents through Saturday. Konawaena and McKinley, two teams that reached the 2003 quarterfinals, also will be part of the event.

Other teams participating are Iolani, Maryknoll, St. Francis, Kamehameha-Big Island and Punahou Division II.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

• UH sweeps: The University of Hawai'i swept Siena, 8-0 and 3-0, yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Shannon Tabion (6-1) pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in the first game. Denise Dahlberg had three hits and four RBIs, Tracie Uchima and Noelle Izumi each had two hits, and Tyleen Tausaga contributed two RBIs for the Rainbow Wahine.

Megan Woltz had both of Siena's hits.

Melissa Coogan (3-6) pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts in the second game. Uchima batted 2 for 3 and Stacey Ritter homered for the Rainbow Wahine.

Hawai'i improved to 9-10 while Siena fell to 0-2.

• HPU washed out: The scheduled doubleheader between Hawai'i Pacific and Notre Dame de Namur yesterday at HPU's Windward Field was postponed because of inclement weather.

It will not be rescheduled.



COLLEGE GOLF

• UH's Odelius shares seventh: University of Hawai'i freshman Sara Odelius shot a 2-under 70 and a 75 yesterday to tie for seventh place after the first two rounds of the Spartan Invitational at the 6,010-yard Corral de Tierra Golf Course in Salinas, Calif.

UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas leads with a 5-under 139 total, followed by California's Sophie Anderson at 141.

UCLA leads the 17-team field with 3-under 573, nine strokes ahead of second-place California. The Rainbow Wahine are ninth at 613.
