HOLES IN ONE
Pair teams up for two aces

"I must have stood over the hold for about five minutes looking at those two balls," says J. Phillip Chubb, right, with Ross Mather, of their back-to-back aces at Wailea Golf Club in November.

Ross Mather and J. Phillip Chubb met for the first time on Nov. 24, and the odds they would ever forget their encounter are about as astronomical as the back-to-back holes in one they scored that day at the Wailea Golf Club.

Mather is a part-time Maui resident. Chubb once lived in Kihei. By chance, the two were paired on the Wailea Emerald Course.

On the eighth hole, Chubb, using an 8-iron, hit the ball 135 yards from the blue markers. It struck the flag stick and dropped into the cup. Mather followed, using an 8-iron, with a 120-yard drive from the white tees. His ball bounced twice before landing in the hole.

"I must have stood over the hole for five minutes looking at those two balls," Chubb said. "I just didn't want to pull them out."

Chubb has played golf for 35 years, and this was his first hole in one.

Mather had one hole in one about five decades ago.

"The mathematical probabilities of (consecutive aces) are practically unfathomable," said Tim Mitchell, pro shop supervisor at the Wailea Golf Club.
