Kaua'i's Keala Kennelly, the 2003 World Championship Tour runner-up, was eliminated in the third round of the Roxy Pro yesterday in excellent 3- to 4-foot waves at Snapper Rocks in Gold Coast, Australia.
The first event of the 2004 tour featured the world's top 17 women surfers and one wildcard entry.
Tour newcomer Laurina McGrath of Australia amassed 14.77 points to oust Kennelly, who scored 10.23.
"My biggest problem here is wave selection and I just picked a bunch of stupid waves in that heat," Kennelly said. "Obviously, people that live here and surf here all the time, surfers like Laurina, have a better idea."
Rochelle Ballard of Hawai'i defeated Australia's Lynette MacKenzie, 16.67 to 11.33, to advance while Hawai'i's Melanie Bartels was eliminated by Australia's Chelsea Georgeson, 14.67 to 8.5.
