Soldier swept out to sea identified

A Schofield Barracks soldier who was swept out to sea at Waimea Bay has been identified as Pvt. Guadalupe I. Duranbatres of Socorro, Texas.
Duranbatres, 20, was a supply specialist assigned to 540th Quartermaster Co., 17th Corps Support Battalion.
Duranbatres was swept away by a large wave at Waimea Bay around midnight Feb. 27 along with five other soldiers. The others made it safely back to shore.
Fire department personnel searched for the missing soldier, but were hampered by high surf and murky waters.
Man injured in Makiki hit-and-run
A 42-year-old man was critically injured yesterday morning when he was hit by a car on Ke'eaumoku Street.
The black Mercedes-Benz drove away after hitting the pedestrian, police said.
Police arrested a 21-year-old Makiki man. The injured man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center with a broken hip and internal injuries.
Witnesses said the injured man appeared intoxicated and was lying on the 'ewa side of an overpass near Cartwright Field when the car made a wide right turn from the basement garage of Matlock Hale at 1326 Ke'eaumoku St., hitting the man.
Masked man robs Kalihi store
A man wearing a mask and carrying a knife robbed a Kalihi convenience store Wednesday night of an undisclosed amount of cash.
The robbery at a Shell station store at 2066 Dillingham Blvd. was reported at 10:15 p.m.
Work-furlough inmate escapes
A 32-year-old man was declared an escapee Wednesday when he failed to return to the Laumaka work furlough program.
Francis Kekona left the facility in Kalihi at 5 a.m. Wednesday. He had been convicted of second-degree robbery and kidnapping, and sentenced to three years and six months in prison, Warden Francis Sequeira said.
