BRANDON LOW

There is no Jonathan Spiker or Caylene Valdez this year going after their fourth state wrestling championship.

But neither the boys tournament nor the girls field is lacking for talent and competition this weekend at Blaisdell Arena. And three wrest-lers, McKinley's Rene Suehiro, Kailua's Danyelle Hedin and Saint Louis' Ben Wil-more, each will be chasing their third state titles.

Both tournaments begin with qualifying, preliminary, quarterfinal and consolation rounds at 10:30 a.m. today and will continue tomorrow with semifinal and consolation rounds 3 and 4 at 11 a.m.

The girls finals and consolation finals are set for 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, and the boys finals and consolation finals will follow at 6:30 p.m.

Last year, Saint Louis' Spiker (152 pounds) became only the second boy in the tournament's 38-year history to win four state titles, and Moanalua's Valdez (114) became the first in the six-year history of the girls tournament to accomplish the feat.

Hedin (125), Wilmore (140) and Suehiro (145) each can win their third championship tomorrow, but all three are seniors. Wilmore has won at 112 and 130, and is seeded No. 2 at 140.

The next one eligible to join Spiker, Valdez and Iolani's Patrick Higa (1986) in the four-title club is Saint Louis sophomore Brandon Low, who won the 112-pound championship last year and is seeded No. 1 at 119 today.

Kahuku sophomore Dan Morita, the person Low defeated in last year's 112 final, is the OIA champ and No. 1 seed at 125 this time. That weight class also includes Baldwin's Kody Shepley, who won the 119 title last year. Shepley is seeded No. 3.

Another tough class is 112, where Hana's Ikaika Medeiros is the No. 1 seed over Iolani's Aaron Ishikawa, who was the champion at 103 last year. Iolani's Kyle Muraoka, last year's champ at 145, is the No. 1 seed at 152.

In the girls field, Roosevelt's Sadie Kaneda is the No. 1 seed at 108 after winning last year's 103 title. At 130, Kamehameha's Jazmine Cockett is seeded No. 1 after finishing second in 2002 and 2003.

Team-wise, defending boys champion Iolani is expected to be challenged by Kamehameha, Baldwin and Kahuku.

Kahuku, the defending girls team champion, will receive strong competition from Iolani and Farrington, which has wrestlers in all 11 divisions including two No. 1 seeds.
