Wave action in Makaha can be rough
On weekends, family would come out to spend a night with Grandmother at her apartment in Makaha.
The children, especially, looked forward to this event, when they would take their bodyboards out to surf.
One day, grandson Eric, then 7, followed his older cousins, bodyboard in tow, for some fun on the waves.
"How was the surf?" I asked Eric, as they all returned after some time riding the waves.
Looking completely drenched, and covered with sand from head to toe, he looked at me in bewilderment.
"I got flooded," he replied.
