An early morning fire in Hawai'i Kai destroyed a three-bedroom home early yesterday.

The family who lived in the house at 737 Kokomo Drive was not at home at the time, HFD Capt. Emmit Kane said. The family owned the house and had lived in it for nearly 30 years.

No injuries were reported.

Kane said the fire was reported at about 7 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found flames shooting through about half of the house. The fire was quickly extinguished but the kitchen, patio, living room and dining room were destroyed.

The cause has not been determined, but investigators are looking closely at the kitchen and patio area, Kane said. Damage was estimated at $270,000. Red Cross workers assisted the displaced family members, who went to stay with relatives.

Man admits to assault on flight

A Colorado man pleaded guilty in federal court Friday to assaulting a flight attendant while aboard a United Airlines flight bound for Maui.

He was sentenced to one year probation and ordered not to consume alcohol while flying.

According to court documents, the flight crew aboard United Airlines Flight 43 on Feb. 29 first became concerned about James Trestrail when he began quarreling with his wife, twisted her wrists and put her in a headlock.

After separating Trestrail and his wife, Trestrail refused flight attendants' instructions to stay seated and later grabbed one of the attendants and tried to kiss her, court documents say.

Federal Magistrate Judge Barry Kurren ordered Trestrail, an insurance salesman, to be released immediately after he pleaded guilty to the assault charge but denied his request for a ticket back to Maui at government expense so he could catch his return flight to Colorado.
