Kahuku became the first non-Interscholastic League of Honolulu school since 1995 to win the Chevron State Wrestling Championship last night before a crowd of 2,548 at Blaisdell Arena.

The Red Raiders, who had two individual champions in Daniel Morita (125 pounds) and Adam Ah Sue (160), scored 170.5 points to win their first state title since 1985. Iolani (136.5) finished second, followed by Kamehameha and Punahou (110.5 each) and Baldwin (103.5).

ILH schools (Iolani, Kamehameha and Saint Louis) had won the previous eight state championships. Before Kahuku did it yesterday, the last O'ahu Interscholastic Association team to win the state title was Leilehua in 1995.

"We have 10 seniors who have been together all four years, but we still felt like underdogs the whole time to Iolani," said Ah Sue, a senior. "We lost to them in the Iolani tournament. But I felt we could do it tonight if we tried really hard. Ever since the girls won the state title last year, the boys were jealous."

Two seniors trying for their third individual state championships were denied in the finals. Saint Louis' Ben Wilmore, who won the 112 title in 2002 and the 130 crown last year, lost to Hilo's Johanson Quist, 4-3, in the 140 final. McKinley's Rene Suehiro, who won at 135 in 2002 and 140 last year, lost to Lahainaluna's Naihe Akoi, 6-5, in an overtime tiebreaker at 145.

The Neighbor Islands had an impressive showing in the finals, with three others besides Quist and Akoi winning championships.

At 112, Hana's Ikaika Medeiros defeated Kahuku's Richard Torres, 17-6. At 135, Kealakehe's Alex Molina defeated Mililani's William Smythe, 5-3. And at 215, Konawaena's Dylan Rush defeated Moloka'i's Matthew Tanielo, 6-1.

Medeiros, a two-time Maui Interscholastic League champion, dedicated his state title to his late aunt, Eleanor Kamai, whose funeral is this weekend. Medeiros' parents, Armine and Randy, missed their son's victory so they could attend Kamai's funeral.

"All four years, I've been trying to win one," said Medeiros. "I couldn't get one until (now)."

Medeiros said Hana has an enrollment of 100, including 22 in the senior class. The wrestling program has 15 athletes, with Medeiros the only senior.

"I practice with my brother Kane (a 119-pound sophomore)," Medeiros said.

Two wrestlers, Saint Louis' Brandon Low (119) and Iolani's Kyle Muraoka (152), repeated as state champions. Low, who won the 112 title as a freshman last year, defeated Kaiser's Blain Ling, 6-2. Muraoka, last year's 145-pound champ, held off Mililani's Dannon Sunga, 9-7.

Kahuku won on the strength of 12 who advanced to the second day.

"It's a great feeling to bring this back to the OIA," coach Reggie Torres said. "It's awesome."
