Quail goes celeb

Oddly enough, there are few things as recognizably Hawaiian as the California quail.

The birds are found in abundance on the Big Island and Moloka'i, as well as on Maui, Lana'i, Kaua'i and O'ahu. Hunters, hikers and other nature lovers are well familiar with the sight and distinctive sound of the quails.

Now the California quail will be recognized on two official stamps used by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife.

But first: The division is holding a contest for art to be used on the stamp. Oil or acrylic paintings no larger than 24 by 36 inches showing the California quail in a Hawai'i habitat (or an 8.5-by-11-inch photocopy) must be submitted before April 7. Visit the department (1151 Punchbowl St., Room 325), see www.dofaw.net, or call 587-4185.

Calling all Angels ...

Here's a chance to find out the story behind the original "Charlie's Angels" TV show that debuted in 1976 and turned Farrah Fawcett-Majors into the sex symbol. The two-hour show "Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Charlie's Angels," starts at 8 tonight on NBC. Should be fun.
