Waikiki board meets Thursday

A special session of the Waikiki Neighborhood Board will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss pending legislation that would affect the area.

Louis Erteschik, chairman of the board's legislative committee, will update the board on specific legislation. The board will then vote on the legislation and the results will be forwarded to the area's lawmakers.

Topics include tax credits for hotels for repairs and construction, the governor's light-rail proposal, business regulation, drugs, noise, money for maintenance to clean the Ala Wai Canal, money for sand at Waikiki Beach, privatization of the Ala Wai Boat Harbor, capital improvement projects and education.

Residents are invited to give their input on the issues.

The meeting is at the Waikiki Community Center, 310 Paoakalani Ave.


Seminar on storm water

A free seminar to discuss storm water management issues will be at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Pacific Regional Visitor Center at Fort DeRussy in Waikiki.

Topics include urban flooding, floodplain management, wetland values and benefits, flash-flood forecasting, notifying the public, safety tips, and the threats and impact of heavy rain and flooding on life and property.

The visitor center is in the Battery Randolph Building directly makai of the Saratoga-Kalia parking lot. Validated parking is $1 per hour.

The event is hosted by the Ala Wai Watershed Association, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Hawai'i Nature Center.

Ruptured main affects Nanakuli

A ruptured water main on Farrington Highway disrupted service to 10 Nanakuli households yesterday.

The break was reported at 8:20 a.m. yesterday. The Board of Water Supply responded to the break and worked most of the day to repair the 12-inch main.

A water supply spokesman said the board hoped to have the main fixed by early last night.
