Jade Abele, the only Rainbow Wahine to start every basketball game this season, earned a place on the all-Western Athletic Conference first team yesterday.

Jade Abele leads UH in scoring and assists.

Abele, a junior forward from Australia, is the WAC's third-leading scorer. She is averaging more than 14 points a game, and also leads Hawai'i in assists, rebounds and 3-pointers. She holds or shares every UH game high this season, with the exception of steals and blocks.

Abele, one of just three UH upper classmen, has played in Hawai'i's past 67 games, starting the past 55.

Point guard Janevia Taylor, the only Rainbow other than Abele to start all 18 WAC games, is on the WAC's all-freshman team. Taylor is second on the team in scoring and assists and first in steals.

Amisha Carter, a senior forward for sixth-ranked Louisiana Tech, is the WAC Player of the Year. She and teammate Trina Frierson are the only seniors on the first team and Frierson is the only repeat selection from last year.

Lauren Neaves (Rice) and Jillian Robbins (Tulsa) round out the top five and also join Taylor on the all-freshman team. Robbins is WAC Newcomer of the Year and Louisiana Tech's Kurt Budke was named Coach of the Year for a second straight season. His team goes into the WAC Tournament with a 16-game winning streak.

All-WAC teams are selected by the head coaches.

The Rainbow Wahine are seeded eighth in the 2004 McCaffrey WAC Tournament, which opens tomorrow. They play ninth-seeded Boise State at 10 a.m. HST, in a "play-in" game at Fresno State's Save Mart Center.

The game will be broadcast live on 1420 AM, beginning at 9:45 a.m.

The winner of the Hawai'i-Boise State game plays top-seeded Louisiana Tech on Wednesday in a quarterfinal.
