BYUH is No. 2 seed for hoops regional

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's basketball team yesterday received the No. 2 seed for the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament in San Bernardino, Calif.

The Seasiders, the Pacific West Conference champions, will play No. 7 seed Alaska-Anchorage on Friday. Tip-off is 12:30 p.m. (HST).

BYUH finished 22-5 overall and 12-3 in the PacWest. The Seasiders have qualified for the regionals three consecutive years.

The Seasiders were the only PacWest team to advance to the postseason.

BYUH is led by Jake Chrisman, who led the PacWest in scoring with a 22.7 points per game average. Shawn Opunui averaged 16.1 points per game and hit 72 3-pointers at a .541 clip.

The Seawolves finished 20-9 overall and in a three-way tie for fourth in the Great Northwest Conference at 10-8.

Cal State-San Bernardino is the regional's top seed and host.


BASEBALL

• HPU swept: Matt Armstrong batted 2 for 4 with two homers and three RBIs as No. 1 Tampa beat Hawai'i Pacific,

7-4, to sweep a doubleheader yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

In the first game, Joey Watts gave up one run in five innings as Tampa beat HPU, 9-3.

Both games were seven innings.

Tampa improved to 18-5; HPU dropped to 6-8.

• Hilo drops pair: Western Illinois scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally past Hawai'i-Hilo, 5-3, yesterday and sweep a doubleheader at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona.

The Vulcans committed two errors and allowed three unearned runs.

In the first game, Tom Pazdernik pitched 6¡Êinnings and Nathan Miller recorded the final two outs as Western Illinois beat Hilo, 3-0.

Both games were seven innings.

Western Illinois improved to 7-7; Hilo dropped to 5-21.


SOFTBALL

• UH loses Malihini final: Lauren Johnson hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning as Long Beach State beat Hawai'i, 3-1, in the final of the Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

LBSU improved to 17-4 overall and 7-0 in the tournament, while UH fell to 15-13 and 6-3.

Hawai'i beat Charleston, 3-2, to reach the final.

The Rainbow Wahine will next play Southern Illinois in a single game tomorrow at 5 p.m.


TRACK & FIELD

• Clay second: Castle High alum Bryan Clay finished second in the heptathlon yesterday at the IAAF World Indoor Championships at Budapest, Hungary.

Clay led after four of the seven events, and achieved personal bests in the 60-meter dash, high jump, 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run.

Clay, 24, will attempt to qualify for the Athens Olympics in the decathlon.

Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic won yesterday's event.
