Woman in dog case sentenced on theft charges

A woman who has had a running battle with the Hawaiian Humane Society for almost a year over the whereabouts and condition of four dogs was sentenced to 30 days in jail yesterday, but not because of the dog battle.

Lucy Kagan will spend a month in jail for theft charges because of two checks she wrote in January 2002 that she stopped payment on.
Circuit Judge Karen Ahn ordered Lucy Kagan to spend a month in jail for writing two checks totaling $351 at Kaimuki Dry Goods in January 2002 and then stopping payment on them before they cleared.

Kagan pleaded no contest Dec. 23 to theft charges. Ahn yesterday ordered her to report to jail tomorrow despite tearful pleas from Kagan that she be allowed to serve the time on weekends so that it won't interfere with her new job with a travel agency or hamper her ability to care for her disabled son.

Hawaiian Humane Society officials opened an animal cruelty investigation in May after police and firefighters responding to a small kitchen fire found more than two dozen animals in Kagan's Hawai'i Kai townhouse. Fourteen animals were returned to her in July, but Humane Society officials said they have been unable to account for four of them.
