City seeks to amend maps

The city is proposing to amend its public infrastructure maps to include four new potential sites for landfill operations — in Wai'anae, 'Ewa and Kailua.

Placing the sites on the maps is the first of many steps necessary to develop a new dump site for O'ahu. The proposal has been sent to neighborhood boards and community associations for comment, including about social, economic or environmental impact.

The four sites are privately owned and would require purchase if selected. The sites are Makaiwa Gulch in 'Ewa across H-1 freeway from Honokai Hale subdivision; Nana-kuli B on Lualualei Naval Road across from the PVT Landfill; Ma'ili on the makai side of Pa'akea Road near Morse Street; and Ameron Quarry in Kailua.

The mayor's draft capital improvement projects budget includes $6.3 million for land acquisition and design for the new municipal solid waste landfill project.

Crews haul dirt to Marine base

The state has begun hauling dirt from the Castle Junction rockfall mitigation project to Marine Corps Base Hawai'i in Kane'ohe.

The Marine base will use the material on its golf course, said Scott Ishikawa, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

The contractor is using the site until it receives the final permit from the city to dump dirt in Maunawili Valley on property managed by Kane'ohe Ranch Co. Ltd.

Trucks are hauling the material along Kamehameha Highway and H-3. About 40 to 50 truckloads were delivered to the base last weekend, Ishikawa said.

Once the permit is obtained, trucks will use Kalaniana'ole Highway to transport the material.

Likelike lanes to be closed

Both town-bound lanes of Likelike Highway will be closed from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. today through Friday for roadway reconstruction and paving, the state Department of Transportation said.

Motorists are advised to take Pali Highway or H-3 Freeway, and should expect nighttime work on Likelike for the next two weeks.

In addition, one Honolulu-bound lane of Likelike will be closed from the Wilson Tunnel to Valley View Drive from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Friday, and one Kane'ohe-bound lane of Likelike from the Burmeister Overpass to Valley View Drive will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday for median improvements and other work.
