THE LEFT LANE
Aloha poster contest

Advertiser Staff and News Services

There's a bit of artist in a child and no medium quite as populist as the T-shirt.

Let Aloha Festivals make the connection.

Organizers of the annual bash are inviting Hawai'i fourth- and fifth-graders to participate in its annual poster contest. The winning artwork will be featured on Aloha Festivals keiki T-shirts sold during the festival.

Five additional students will see their art featured on Aloha Festivals note cards. All of the winners will be invited to ride in the Aloha Festivals Floral Parade on Sept. 11.

Designs should reflect the 2004 theme, "No na kamalii (For the children)." Entries will be judged on accuracy (spelling), originality, creativity, and clarity of the Aloha Festivals theme and mission. Deadline to submit is April 2. Entry forms are available at the Aloha Festivals office at Ward Warehouse. For more information: 589-1771 or www.alohafestivals.com.

Skin by Raffaele

Alison Raffaele
The first time Alison Raffaele visited Honolulu, she was alone. She was a bride of just a week and her bridegroom, Glenn Tatem, had to work and couldn't come with her.

This trip, however, he'll be at her side, hiking Diamond Head and driving to the North Shore to check out the big surf. That is, when she's not working.

The founder of Skin Alison Raffaele, a line of cosmetics that began with a single product, a concealer, is a favorite with fashion magazines and celebrities.

She started the company because, after many years as a makeup artist, she could not find the right concealer. "I'm Polish/Italian with fair olive skin and dark circles. I could never find a concealer that covered and blended well," so she created one.

She'll be offering free consultations at Sephora Ala Moana on Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
