QUICK BITES
Creamery opens second Honolulu location

By Wanda A. Adams
Advertiser Food Editor

Ice cream sound good? Today's the day if you're in town: Cold Stone Creamery has opened a second Honolulu location at 1960 Kapi'olani Blvd., Suite 102, (McCully Shopping Center) and is celebrating the official grand opening today with free spoon samples from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. And if you ante up and buy the trademark frozen goulash of ice cream and goodies (minced cookies, candy bars and such), 20 percent of the proceeds go to the United Cerebral Palsy of Hawaii. There will be a drawing for a year's worth of ice cream and other grand-opening activities from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight.

Gourmet benefit to feature noted chef

Sam Choy's annual Gourmet Affair fund-raiser for Big Brothers, Big Sisters is 6 p.m. March 27 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Ballroom. He's bringing the energetic and multi-talented chef-restaurateur Todd English in to create "A Taste of Tuscany." English's latest project (in addition to his more than a dozen restaurants in Boston and elsewhere around the country, including Olives, Figs and Kingfish Hall) is a line of fine olive oils packaged under his name brand (www.toddenglish.com). He is the James Beard Foundation's 1994 Northeast Chef of the Year and Bon Appetit's 2001 Restaurateur of the Year.

Oh, and he also was on People magazine's 2001 list of the 50 Most Beautiful People. It's been suggested some folks will pay the $200 admission to the Gourmet Affair just to get an up-close and personal look at him. I like this event because it's low-key and enjoyable (business or aloha attire), with more affordable auction items; Sam's warm personality is the driver. Tickets (deadline is March 19): 521-3811.
