Iolani graduate becomes career points leader at Cal State L.A.

Cal State Los Angeles junior point guard Monica Tokoro became the school's all-time leading scorer when she hit a 3-pointer from the right wing with 20.1 seconds left in a 91-84 loss to San Francisco State on Friday night.

Tokoro, a 2001 graduate of Iolani from 'Aiea, scored her 1,531st point, passing Suzie Iwami for the school's all-time scoring lead. Iwami scored 1,528 points from 1977-80.

Tokoro was also named to the Daktronics Women's Basketball All-Region Team for the second year in a row after averaging 20 points and 5.1 assists per game.

She is now eligible for All-America honors, which will be announced March 23.

Women's Swimming

• Tulane (New Orleans) freshman distance swimmer Leslie Christian (Leilehua '03 of Wahiawa) was named to the Conference USA first team based on her performance at the C-USA Championships.

Christian earned first-team honors after winning the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16 minutes, 52.64 seconds, which is also an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

She also picked up third-team honors in the 500 freestyle, finishing third in 4:58.94.

Wrestling

• Cornell junior Travis Lee (Saint Louis '01 of Liliha) won the 133-pound division in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association tournament by beating Matt Cisaulli of Lehigh, 13-4.

Lee, the top-ranked wrestler in his division, qualified for the NCAA Championship tournament with the win. The NCAA tournament will be held in St. Louis, March 18-20.

• Iowa State sophomore Grant Nakamura (Baldwin '01 of Wailuku) placed third at 125 pounds in the Big 12 tournament, beating then-No. 18 Cody Stites of Oklahoma State in the consolation finals, 3-2 in overtime

Nakamura also qualified for the NCAA tournament with the win.

Softball

• Two former Hawai'i high school athletes are returning home to play in the University of Hawai'i's Hawai'i Invitational softball tournament.

California junior center fielder Kaleo Eldredge (Baldwin '01 of Kahului) is batting .362 with 25 hits, including five doubles and three home runs.

Northwestern senior catcher J.C. Kira (St. Francis '00 of Honolulu) is batting .178 with one home run and a .987 fielding percentage (two errors in 154 chances).

The other teams in the tournament are Utah, Texas and Nittadai (Japan). The tournament runs March 18-21 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Women's Tennis

• Loyola Marymount freshman Kimi Kaloi (Kamehameha '03 of Wahiawa) teamed with Carla Arguelles for a victory at No. 1 doubles Thursday, defeating Furman's Caroline Bentley and Jacqueline Eckert, 8-1.

Kaloi also defeated Eckert in singles after dropping the first set, 2-6, 7-6, 6-0.

• Whitworth (Spokane, Wash.) sophomore Sandy Fujitani (King Kekaulike of Kula) was the only Pirate to win her match against Puget Sound on Saturday.

Fujitani defeated Sarah Mars, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.

Fujitani has a 4-2 singles record, going 1-1 at the No. 5 position and 3-1 at No. 6.

Baseball

• Hartnell (Salinas, Calif.) Community College freshman outfielder Christopher Balatico (Mililani '03) hit three triples and knocked in five runs in a 7-4 victory Thursday over West Valley, last year's conference champions.

His third triple scored the go-ahead and insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Freshman second baseman Dustin Nuibe (Mililani '03), outfielder Cameron Kimura (Roosevelt '03) and catcher Danny Takeshita (Hilo '03) are also on the team.
