St. Joseph High School seniors Jazmin Pa'akaula, Lindsey Lee and Ashley Hanohano have made verbal commitments to play volleyball at Fairfield (Conn.) University next season.

Fairfield, an NCAA Division I program, competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Pa'akaula, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter, was an Advertiser All-State first-team selection in 2001 and 2002, and was a second-team choice this past season.

Lee, a 5-5 middle blocker, made the second team in 2002 and 2003.

Hanohano, a setter, was a first-team All-Big Island Interscholastic Federation selection.

The trio helped the Cardinals win their first BIIF title in 2002 and led them to three straight state tournament appearances, including the 2002 championship match.

They plan to sign their national letters of intent April 14.

• Junior Olymics: Hawai'i's top Junior Olympic Boxers, ages 8 to 16, will compete in the 2004 State Championships, March 20 and 21 at Maui's War Memorial Gym.

Bouts start at 7 p.m. on March 20 and noon on March 21.

Weight class winners from the 15- 16-year-old division advance to the National Championships in Brownsville, Texas, on June 18 through June 27.

Scheduled to compete in the 15- 16-year-old division are nationally ranked Maui boxers, No. 6 Thomas Ordonez and No. 9 Chazz Moleta.

SOFTBALL

• UH blanked: Amy Harre pitched a three-hit shutout with three strikeouts as Southern Illinois beat Hawai'i, 4-0, yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hawai'i's Shannon Tabion lasted three innings before leaving with stiffness in her back. She gave up a two-run homer to Katie Louis in the second inning.

Melissa Coogan relieved and allowed two runs on three hits in four innings, while striking out four.

The Rainbow Wahine fell to 15-14 while Southern Illinois improved to 13-6.

BASKETBALL

BYUH player honored: Brigham Young-Hawai‘i men’s basketball player Jake Chrisman was named to the Daktronics All-West Region First Team yesterday.

Chrisman was the only player from a Pacific West Conference school named to either the first or second team. Chrisman led the PacWest in scoring (22.7 ppg) and ranked second in field goal percentage (57.9) during the regular season.

BYU-Hawai‘i will face Alaska-Anchorage on Friday in the first round of the NCAA West Regional.  UAA’s Peter Bullock was also a first-team selection. The five first-team members will be placed on the national ballot for Daktronics All-America voting.
