THE LEFT LANE
4 UH athletes corner cover of On Campus

Advertiser Staff and News Services

We're not sure if the Sports Illustrated cover curse extends to its Sports Illustrated On Campus editions, but if it does — yikes — the March 4 issue could take down four of our programs.

University of Hawai'i athletes Natalie Groenewoud (soccer), Haim Shimonovich (basketball), Kanoe Kamana'o (volleyball) and Nicole Wright (track and field) are pictured on a beach under the headline, "Why Aren't You Here?"

SI On Campus writer Bill Syken visited UH as part of the magazine's ongoing Roadtrip feature. His article examines why — despite successful sports programs, quality academics, and, of course, great surf — UH programs have trouble attracting top national recruits.

Quoted in the article are UH head football coach June Jones, volleyball player Jake Muise, and basketball players Brittany Grice and Amy Sanders.

Meet celebrities, adopt rubber duckie

Ever wondered what it would be like to be waited on by a local celebrity? Your chance awaits Sunday, when Island personalities turn wait staff for a day at Hale'iwa Joe's Seafood Grill in Kane'ohe.

Notables such as entertainer Carole Kai, singer Sonya Mendez (right) and former University of Hawai'i football quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen will be on hand 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to encourage diners to adopt a rubber duckie for United Cerebral Palsy of Hawai'i, or make a contribution (via their tips) to the organization.

All proceeds from the event will go to support local programs of the association. For details: 532-6744.

Make cake pan stains disappear this way

Need to remove the water stains from your favorite aluminum cake pan? Minerals in the water cause the discoloration. Try bringing 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar and 1 quart of water to boil in a saucepan, then pouring the solution into the cake pan and letting it sit a while. If you wish, you can put the water-filled cake pan into a 250-degree oven to keep the solution warm longer.

Facing prom without mom? Tell us about it

High school proms are often a bonding experience for mothers and daughters: shopping for that perfect dress and choosing the right hairdo and makeup together.

If you're a high schooler preparing for your first prom, but your military mother has been deployed, we want to hear from you.

How are you preparing for prom without Mom? Tell us — as soon as possible, for an Advertiser story — what it's like to get ready for your first prom when Mom is half a world away. Reach Zenaida Serrano Espanol at 535-8174 or zespanol@honoluluadvertiser.com.
