Bostock juggling 'Chi,' arts fest, child's birthday

DADDY'S GIRLS: Entrepreneur Tim Bostock's plate has been full lately. Not only is he presenting "Chi," the Shanghai acrobatic show opening tonight at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, he's coordinating the Hawai'i Arts Festival launch that promotes cultural events to Island visitors. With daughter Leilani turning 7 today, a conventional birthday party was not in the cards. But Leilani gets to celebrate with world-class acrobats providing oohs and ahhs. ...

Speaking of super dads: Rudy Trias, father of "American Idol" finalist Jasmine Trias, is understandably excited about her role in the Fox TV series; he accompanies her on the Mainland. If Trias goes the distance, the Mililani dad, who works for the federal government, would be in this for the long haul, too. "I've been taking vacation and some leave, to be with Jasmine, and they've been understanding," he said. Because Jasmine is 17 and a minor, a parent or guardian must accompany her. The competition goes into full swing Tuesday, and dad Trias could be involved till May 26, when the third "Idol" is named. ...

OsbournesOzzy, Sharon, Jack, Kelly — dined at Hoku's at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental recently as part of a Hawai'i vacation being taped for their MTV reality series. Ozzy and Sharon also taped a segment at the Battleship Missouri Memorial at Pearl Harbor on Monday; he left with a Missouri baseball cap and custom dog tags. ...

Dominic Chianese, who plays Corrado "Uncle Junior" Soprano on HBO's "The Sopranos," will be in Hawai'i on March 27 to herald the hit show's fifth season with an invitational bash intended for Oceanic Time Warner folks and media. The invite promises the Bada Bing dancers and more. KRTR/KGMZ will be giving away 10 sets of tickets to fans — the only way to be an insider. ...

SIGHT 'EMS: First there was George and Gracie, then Martin and Lewis, then Penn and Teller. Now Paul and Linda? Last Thursday, comedian Paul Ogata hosted Hawaii Literacy's First Annual Read & Write Awards Gala at the Hawaii Prince Hotel. The honorary chairperson was Gov. Linda Lingle. "As I returned to the podium after her speech, she told the crowd, 'I hope he's not going to joke about how much taller I am than he is.' I know a setup when I see one, so I stood next to her and told the people, 'The governor and I are the same height. I'm just farther away.' " Right on. ...

Ogata, who performs Fridays and Saturdays with Andy Bumatai after the Frank DeLima comedy gig at Ohana Reef Towers' Palace Showroom, will appear with Bumatai and DeLima in a Secretary's Day luncheon April 21 (11 a.m. lunch seating; show at 11:45 a.m.). Tickets are $39.50; call 923-7469 or 922-6408 for reservations. There's no Bumatai-Ogata show tomorrow night, however, since Bumatai landed a role on NBC's "Hawai'i" pilot filming here this week. ...

Lloyd J. Wood remembers that Paul Winfield, the Oscar nominee who died Sunday, in the title role in "Coriolanus," a 1970 Kennedy Theatre production directed by Glenn Cannon, along with the late Irish actor Cyril Cusack (Menenius). "I remember Paul as a young, lithe, mischievous rascal who liked to party with us all," said Wood, part of a cast that included John Hunt, David Schaeffer, James Grant Benton, Earll Kingston and Pat Herman. Wood directed Sacred Hearts Thespian Troupe's "Little Women" last week. ...

Local girl Adealani Malia is guest director-choreographer of Diamond Head Theatre's "Swing!" musical, opening March 26, which pleases the cast. Her pal, Murray Phillips, has joined her from Los Angeles to work on lifts and partnering. Both did separate national tours of this dance-heavy show. ...
