Digital cable hit by corrupt data

All 70,000 of Oceanic Cable's digital cable users on O'ahu lost their connection from 9:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. yesterday when the company received some corrupt data, according to Norman Santos, the company's vice president of operations.

Santos likened the situation to a computer virus and said the fix is to simply reboot the cable boxes. The company first tried to do an islandwide reboot.

"We thought the boxes would receive the new information and would reauthorize themselves," Santos said. "Apparently, that is not the case."

To reboot at home, Santos said, the box should be unplugged for at least 10 seconds and then plugged back in. The system will take about 30 seconds to reload cable information and then should be working.

For more information, call Oceanic at 625-8100.

Kailua meeting today on dump

Concerns over the possible use of Kapa'a Quarry in Kailua for a landfill are growing, and community groups and business organizations have joined forces to discuss the issue at 7 tonight at Kailua District Park.

Kapa'a Quarry and three other locations were selected by a blue-ribbon committee as possible sites for a new O'ahu landfill.

The City Council is supposed to select a site by June 1, but Councilman Rod Tam hopes to delay the decision for six months.

The Kailua Neighborhood Board and the Kailua Chamber of Commerce will host the meeting, which is open to the public.
