A 78-year-old woman was killed early today when she was struck by a car while walking on Diamond Head Road near the lighthouse.

The pedestrian, the eighth killed on O'ahu this year, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:35 a.m., said Emergency Medical Services assistant chief of operations Donnie Gates. The accident was reported to police at 5:12 a.m.

The woman was walking kokohead on the makai side of the road when she was hit from behind by a car that jumped a curb, said police vehicular homicide investigations supervisor Lt. Bennett Martin.

The car was driven by a 31-year-old man, who was arrested.

Diamond Head Road was closed to traffic in both directions until 9:05 a.m.

The death is O'ahu’s 18th traffic fatality of the year, compared with 17 on this date last year. It is the second fatality in three days.

A 25-year-old Pacific Palisades man was arrested on two additional traffic-related counts in connection with Wednesday’s fatal crash in Pearl City. The man, who surrendered to police at 1:10 a.m. yesterday, was booked on failure-to-render aid and second-degree negligent homicide. He also has been arrested for auto theft and possession of fraudulent license plates.

The man admitted to police that he was driving the stolen car which crashed into a carport of a corner house at the intersection of Waimano Home Road and Ho'omoana Street in Momilani, killing Kevin Urata, 38, a passenger in the car.
