Hawai'i fencer finishes 2nd at championships

Hawai'i fencer Joshua Thurlow will compete at the United States Fencing Association Summer Nationals after finishing second at the Junior Pacific Coast Championships on Feb. 29.

Thurlow, who has been fencing for nine years, will compete in the under-19 epee, the Division I-A men's epee and the Division II men's foil at the summer nationals at North Carolina in July.

Thurlow is a member of the Hawai'i Fencer's Club.



POLE VAULTING

Olympic trials qualifier: Pole vaulter Bubba Mclean, a former St. Anthony High School and University of California athlete, qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials, to be held in Sacramento, Calif., in July.

Mclean surpassed his personal best of 18 feet, 2ý inches by going 18-6ý — the Olympic qualifying standard — in a last-chance meet in Arkansas in February.
