A 76-year-old Waikiki woman was killed early yesterday when she was struck by a car while walking on Diamond Head Road near the lighthouse.

The woman was walking in the kokohead direction on the makai side of the road when she was struck from behind by a 1990 Subaru station wagon that jumped the raised asphalt curb, said Lt. Bennett Martin, police vehicular homicide investigations supervisor.

The car was driven by a 31-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of negligent driving that caused a death.

The pedestrian, the eighth killed on O'ahu this year, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:35 a.m., said Donnie Gates, assistant chief of operations for Emergency Medical Services. The accident was reported to police at 5:12 a.m.

The death was O'ahu's 18th traffic fatality of the year compared with 17 at this time last year.
