Conditions piled on Makena plan

WAILUKU, Maui — If the Makena Resort is allowed to rezone hundreds of acres for luxury housing and visitor accommodations, it will come with a price.

A Maui County Council committee last night was preparing dozens of conditions for approval ranging from making sure there's enough affordable housing to providing for bike paths.

But the council's Planning and Land Use Committee delayed a final vote until 9:30 a.m. Monday in the county council chambers.

Makena Resort is asking for a zone change that would allow some 150 acres of condominiums and apartments as well as a 28-acre time-share project just south of the company's Maui Prince Hotel.

The resort's 20-year plan calls for construction of 89 time-share units and 1,500 mostly condominium units.

The committee had heard 30 hours of testimony.

Council members were discussing conditions addressing affordable housing, traffic, cultural and historic resources, drainage, parks and water.
