UH-HPU baseball postponed

Advertiser Staff

Last night's Hawai'i Pacific-Hawai'i baseball game at Les Murakami Stadium was postponed because of rain.

The decision was made by UH after a one-hour, 25-minute delay.

The game will be made up at a date to be determined, a UH spokesman said.

The Rainbows (14-7), winners of five in a row and 13 of their past 15, will hit the road for the first time when they play a three-game series against defending national champion Rice. It will be the Rainbows' Western Athletic Conference opener.

Hawai'i Pacific (6-10), trying to snap a four-game losing skid, has three doubleheaders starting tomorrow against Presbyterian College at Aloha Stadium.

Spectators at last night's game were issued rain check certificates. Those who had tickets for last night, but did not use them, will be allowed to use them for the make-up game, the school said.

GOLF

• Fujita leads State Amateur: Del-Marc Fujita shot a 5-under par 67 yesterday and has a three-stroke lead entering the final round of the Hawai'i State Amateur State Stroke Play Championship at Pearl County Club.

Fujita's score yesterday was the best round of the tournament and his total after three rounds is 210. He is a former University of Hawai'i golfer.

Matt Kodama, a UH senior who led after the second round, is second and Jonathan Mathias is six strokes off the lead.

The final round will be today at 11:20 a.m.

SOFTBALL

• BYUH sweeps Chaminade: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i softball team swept Chaminade in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday at the BYUH field in Lai'e.

The Seasiders won, 1-0 and 3-1.

BYUH's Echo Hatch pitched a one-hitter in the opener with 13 strikeouts. The only baserunner she allowed reached on a single in the seventh inning.

Amanda Nino doubled in Rachel Delany in the sixth for the game's only run.

In the second game, Delany, Nino and Kapu Chung drove in runs.

• Hilo, Point Loma split: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo and Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) split a doubleheader yesterday at UHH field.

The Lions (6-10) won the opener, 5-3, and the Vulcans (17-6) took the second game, 5-2.

Hilo's Natalie Fujimoto homered and drove in four runs in the second game, and Tara Martinez scattered six hits over seven innings to earn the win.

DIVING

• Two more from UH qualify: University of Hawai'i divers Jonathan Coyle and Maggie Roberts qualified for the NCAA Championships yesterday at the Zone E Regionals at Oklahoma City Community College.

Coyle finished third in the men's platform event with a score of 451.45, and Roberts was fifth with 357.15.

Teammates Michael Gowdy and QiongJie Huang qualified Friday in the 1-meter diving event.

The scheduled speakers are Mike Wilton, University of Hawai'i men's volleyball coach; John Korff, organizer of the U.S. Olympic Triathlon trials; and Ken Suenaga, general chairman of Hawai'i Swimming.

The club's luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. The public is invited.

VOLLEYBALL

UH women's exhibition tickets: Courtside seats for Friday's volleyball match between the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine and Nittaidai of Japan go on sale tomorrow.

The exhibition will start at 7 p.m. Hawai'i and Nittaidai University have played more than 20 times since UH coach Dave Shoji took his team to Japan to train in 1979. That season, the Rainbow Wahine won the first of their four national championships.

General admission Friday is $5. Tickets are available at the Stan Sheriff Center Box Office, Aloha Stadium, UH Campus Center, Rainbowtique at Ward Centre and Windward Community College's OCET office. They are also available by phone, at 944-BOWS, or online, at etickethawaii.com.

The Rainbows officially open their 2004 season Sept. 2-5 in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic. They play Eastern Washington opening night, and also face San Diego and Arizona in the Classic.
