Maui recorded its fourth traffic death of 2004 yesterday when a pedestrian was struck by a car and then run over by a sport-utility vehicle at the Haleakala Bypass intersection with Makani Road.

The accident was reported to police at 7:30 p.m. The pedestrian, a 65-year-old man from Makawao, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Judge releases stolen-car driver

The driver of a stolen Acura Integra involved in a fatal crash Wednesday in Pearl City was released yesterday by a district judge. The 25-year-old Pacific Palisades man had been under arrest since early Thursday on suspicion of auto theft, failure to render aid and second-degree negligent homicide in connection with the death of Kevin Urata.

Police were continuing their investigation into the driver’s claim that a pickup truck struck the Acura twice, causing him to lose control of the car, which skidded across Waimano Home Road and into the carport of a home at 895 Ho'omoana St.

Police found a stolen pickup truck on Friday. The truck was examined and returned to its owner, police said.

Man who died in cell identified

The medical examiner's office today identified a man found dead on March 7 in his cell at the Honolulu Police Department headquarters as Sidney Kuroiwa, 34.

Although a death-cause determination cannot be made until laboratory test results are available, police said they found no evidence of foul play. Kuroiwa had been charged with forgery.
