Returning sailors resume tutoring

The Navy's Patrol Squadron 4, back from a six-month deployment to Japan, will again assist He'eia Elementary School in Kane'ohe through the Navy's Partnership with Schools program.

The squadron, known as the Skinny Dragons, tutors the children and helps out with intramural sports.

Later this month, the Skinny Dragons will help the school's Cyber Walk campaign, which raises money for the school's computer lab.

The goal of the Partnership program is to provide positive role models for children while helping to offset high student-teacher ratios.

"It's a very rewarding experience," said Lt. Martin Ortiz, one of the volunteers.

Help available for blind veterans

A workshop for blind veterans and their families will be held March 29 and March 30 at Tripler Army Medical Center's Kyser Auditorium.

The Blinded Veterans Association's workshop on benefits and services will run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day.

Blinded Veterans Association representative Larry Martinez and Veterans Affairs experts will present the information.

The Kyser Auditorium is near the main flag pole at Tripler. From H-1, follow the VA Hospital signs past the Tripler guard house.

Go up up Jarrett White Road and take the first left turn onto Ward Road. Parking is free. Enter beneath the plexiglass canopy.

For more information contact Lionel Parker, 433-0501.

Death is topic of workshop

The Military Reserves Retirees Association will hold a workshop on "The Final Plan — Getting Ready for What Nobody Wants to Talk About."

Attendees will be taught how to prepare a plan to provide survivors with the basic information they need when someone dies.

The workshop, part of the Association's bimonthly meeting, will be held March 20 from 10 a.m. to noon at Hickam Air Force Base, Building 2176 (48 Aerial Port Squadron), 95 Moffet St.

It is open to all retired military personnel from the Military Reserves or National Guard and their spouses.
