UH volleyball setter Tuyay to start in BYU match

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i volleyball setter Kimo Tuyay, who started the previous three seasons before ceding the job to freshman Brian Beckwith this year, will be in the opening lineup for Thursday’s match against top-ranked Brigham Young.

Beckwith, who is suffering from a viral infection, did not practice Saturday and yesterday.

Even if Beckwith were to be declared fit for the BYU match, UH coach Mike Wilton said, "I’m starting Kimo Thursday."

Wilton added: "The main thing we want out of Brian is a complete and full recovery."

In 2002, Tuyay led the Warriors to a four-game victory over Pepperdine in the NCAA championship match.

Meanwhile, the Warriors remained at No. 5 in this week’s USA Today/American Volleyball Coaches Association top-15 poll. The Warriors and Pepperdine, which lost two matches to BYU last week, were tied for fifth last week.

BYU and UCLA were tied at No. 1 in last week’s poll. BYU earned all 14 No. 1 votes from the panel of coaches participating in this week’s poll.

Long Beach State, which defeated UCLA in three games last week, ascended to No. 2. UCLA dropped to No. 3.
